LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A couple of days after being named the Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year by the conference, NM State women’s basketball head coach Mark Trakh has received the same honor from College Sports Madness, the entity announced Wednesday.

Madness announced its entire list of WAC honors including first and second teams and player of the year.  The Aggies placed two players on the CSM All-WAC first team, point guard Shanice Davis and Brianna Freeman, who was tabbed the WAC Player of the Year by the conference.

Junior and NM State leading scorer Sasha Weber was placed on the All-WAC second team by CSM.  All three Aggie players chosen by CSM were also part of the All-WAC first team as announced on Monday by the conference.

Weber and Davis each garnered a WAC Player of the Week award during the season while Freeman won the award in back-to-back weeks.

It has been a stellar season for women’s program, which went 20-7 this season.  NM State won the WAC regular-season championship after going 13-1 in conference games.  It was the first outright conference championship for the team in 20 years.

Trakh, who is in his fourth season with the Aggies, had never finished above .500 or higher than sixth in the WAC in his previous three seasons with the school.  But the NM State head man from Wanque, N.J., has led the Aggies to a breakout season as NM State will see its first postseason play in five years.

Before any NCAA postseason play, however, the Aggies first will attempt to add a WAC Tournament championship to its regular-season title.  NM State begins that quest on Friday at 1 p.m. (MDT) with a semifinal matchup versus the winner of the Utah Valley-Seattle U quarterfinal game on Wednesday.
