NM State Men’s Tennis Finishes Regular Season Unbeaten in WAC play

CHICAGO– The New Mexico State men’s tennis team clinched the No. 1 seed for the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Championships after defeating Chicago State, 6-1, Saturday in Chicago.

The Aggies finished the regular season with a 9-13 overall record and a perfect 5-0 in WAC play. The Cougars fell to 4-15 overall and 0-3 in the WAC.

NM State dominated from start to finish, and also claimed the doubles’ point for the first time in six dual-matches.

In doubles’ play, the three Aggie teams picked-up wins to clinch the point and the sweep.

NM State’s No. 1 doubles’ team of freshman Christofer Goncalves and senior Patrick Pfister defeated Sergiu Muresan and Mario Noboa, 8-2.

Senior Paul Denele and sophomore Charles Baron claimed a 8-5 victory on court No. 2, while junior Trahinja Trecakov and junior Liam Goldberg defeated Rashley Yeremia and Christian Gonzales, 8-2.

The Aggies kept the pace during singles by winning five of the six singles’ matches.

Trecakov, Goncalves, Pfister, Goldberg and Baron all picked wins to guarantee the NM State victory.

The lone Chicago State point came when Muresan defeated Denele, 6-4, 6-4, on court No. 2.

The Aggies will have two weeks to prepare before they travel to Kansas City, Mo. for the WAC Championships, April 24-26.
