DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference office announced on Monday, April 13 that sophomore Camille Orito was awarded the WAC Golfer of the Week for the week of April 6-12. This is Orito’s third WAC Golfer of the Week or Month award she has won this year and the fourth of her career.
Orito, a native Fresno, Calif., took ninth at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic last week after shooting a 5-over-par 221 in three rounds of play. She shot a 2-under 70 on the final day helping the Aggies to a seventh place finish among the 22 teams in the field. Orito had the fourth-most birdies with nine over the two-day event to help finish in the 10 10 for the fourth time this year.
“I’m not surprised by Camille’s WAC Golfer of the Week award. She comes to practice early and leaves after everyone else,” said head coach Jackie Booth. “Our team believes success is dirty-hard work and Camille is proof of our belief. I’m very proud of her.”
Orito was also named WAC Golfer of the Week on Feb. 16 after she tied for sixth place in a weather-shortened Delta Gamma Challenge in New Braunfels, Texas during the week of Feb. 9-15. During that tournament she carded a three-under par 68 in the first round sitting just one shot out of the lead before shooting a three-over 74 in the second round to finish at an even-par 142 in the two-round tournament.
During the fall season this year, Orito was named the WAC Golfer of the Month for the month of September after she finished in the top 10 in the two tournaments she competed in. She opened September winning the Hobble Creek Fall Classic in Springville, Utah with a 1-over par 143 (70-73). Orito helped the Aggies to a first place finish in the 12-team field that included three other WAC schools. Orito then placed eighth at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif., with an 11-over par 227 (75-75-77).
Orito and the Aggies are now preparing to defend their WAC Title in the 2015 WAC Tournament, April 20-22 in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
