LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team will be defending its Western Athletic Conference title in the hopes of winning a second straight conference title when it takes to the Wigwam Golf Club Heritage Course in Litchfield, Ariz., Monday-Wednesday, April 20-22.
The Aggies will play against Utah Valley, Seattle, Kansas City, Bakersfield, Chicago State, UTPA and Grand Canyon on the par 72, 6,291 yard course. Playing this week for the Aggies are sophomores Camille Orito, Valeria Macias and Kristen Cline along with juniors Kacey Dalpes and Viviana Macias.
“We played the course a couple of times since we’ve been playing in Arizona all spring,” head coach Jackie Booth said. “The course is pretty straight forward and there doesn’t seem to be anything too tricky.”
The Aggies finished the regular season averaging 297.96 stokes per round and won one tournament (Hobble Creek Fall Classic – Sept.9), while finishing second in another (Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate – Sept. 28) and third in another (NM State Aggie Invitational – Oct. 8). Orito leads the Aggie squad as she has been named WAC Golfer of the Week twice and WAC Golfer of the Month once this year. She was named the 2014 WAC Freshman of the Year and is averaging 73.75 strokes per round in 24 rounds of play.
Viviana Macias has also played all 24 rounds this year and is averaging 74.08 strokes per round while she has tallied five top 20 finishes and two top 10 finishes. Her best finish was a tie for second at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic and has six rounds at or under par this year.
Dalpes is the third Aggie to play in each and every round this year marked a low round of 70 during the NM State Aggie Invitational and tied for second in the Hobble Creek Fall Classic while tying for third in Red Rocks Invitational. She is averaging 74.92 stokes per round this season.
“We’ve been practicing a lot of chipping and a lot of putting, which will be the key to winning,” Booth said. “We have talked a lot about attitude and how we have to have the right mindset. We’ve come full circle in terms of preparing both mentally and physically.
Live scoring will be available online at www.GolfStat.com and a recap of each day’s play will be available at www.NMStateSports.com. The men’s golf team will also be defending its title on the Gold Course of the Wigwam Golf Club.
“The team is super excited to be at the same place with the men’s team because we feed off of each other,” Booth said.
