LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State football team held its Spring Game at Aggie Memorial Stadium, Saturday, April 25 with the White (offense) defeating the Crimson (defense) 42-40.
The Aggie offense scored six touchdowns with six PAT’s for 42 points while the NM State defense played well scoring 40 points using the suggested scoring system. The defense had chances to score six points on a turnover, three points while holding the offense to a 3-and-out, and one point for every tackle for loss of yardage. The defense tallied 15 points for five 3-and-out situations, 18 points via three turnovers and seven points on tackles for loss.
The NM State offense tallied four rushing touchdowns, including a 24-yard scamper from running back Larry Rose III, who finished the day with just under 100 yards on the ground at 97. Quarterback Tyler Rogers finished the day going 8-of-14 in passing attempts with 116 yards, one interception and one touchdown. He threw a nice 65-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyrian Taylor in the second half. Nick Jeanty also saw snaps underneath center on Saturday afternoon and finished going 5-of-10 for 93 yards, which includes a 65-yard touchdown pass to Tymon Locklin during the first half.
Quarterback Jason Fitzpatrick also had a chance to get in some work at the quarterback position and went 7-of-8 for 65 yards in the air.
Defensively, linebacker Derek Ibekwe led the charge with six total tackles on the afternoon and was in on one tackle for loss. Defensive lineman Josh Gibbs tallied five tackles although it was defensive end Stephen Meredith who was able to get to the quarterback, picking up a sack and helping the defensive squad pick up another point. Defensive back Jaden Wright helped the defense with six points as he picked off the Aggie QB.
The 2015 season starts on Sept. 5 when the Aggies face Florida in Gainesville, Fla. The home opener is set for Sept. 12 versus Georgia State with the first rivalry game set for Sept. 19 against UTEP. For ticket information call the Pan American Center ticket office at 575-646-1420.
