LAS CRUCES, N.M.- The New Mexico State men’s tennis team will face No. 1 overall seed Oklahoma in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships in Norman, Okla. on Friday, May 8.
“It’s going to be a tough task to beat the best team in the country,” NM State head coach Carlos Vargas said. “Regardless of the outcome, we are going to enjoy this experience. This trip can also teach us how to get to the top.”
The Western Athletic Conference champion Aggies go into the NCAA Championships with an 11-13 overall record and have won their last four dual-matches.
NM State has not been to the NCAA Championships since the 2000 season, where the Aggies were eliminated by Notre Dame, 4-0.
This will be the first meeting between the Sooners and the Aggies.
Big 12 tournament champion Oklahoma goes into the NCAA Championships with a 23-2 overall record and unbeaten at home with a 12-0 record at the Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion.
Norman, Okla. will also host the first round match-up between Northwestern and Harvard, with the winner of that dual-match facing the winner of the NM State and Oklahoma dual-match.
