LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State Athletics had a record-setting year in 2014-15 and add to it the best finish in school history in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.
The Aggies placed 108th nationally with 177.5 points in the annual competition hosted by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
The Directors’ Cup recognizes programs by awarding points for an institution’s success in NCAA Championships competition during a scholastic year.
The ranking of 108 betters NM State’s previous high placement of 141 set in the second year of the Directors’ Cup program in 1994-95. The Aggies 177.5 points is one-half point away from exactly doubling NM State’s previous high-point total of 89 set in the 2012-13 season.
“This is a great day for Aggie Nation,” said NM State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. “The Directors’ Cup has been a measuring stick for athletic success for over 20 years. I am unbelievably thrilled that we set our all-time high this year. We want to celebrate this and set our goal to crack the top 100 next year.”
The Aggies scored points in seven sports this season thanks to Western Athletic Conference Championships in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and softball.
Those triumphs led to the Aggies winning the WAC Commissioner’s Cup for the first time in school history.
The women’s golf team gave NM State the most points of any program this season in the Directors’ Cup, as their seventh place finish at the regional tournament equated to a 25th place national finish and scored 47.5 points for the Crimson and White.
NM State led the way in the WAC with the 177.5 points, with CSU Bakersfield collecting 76 points, Seattle U. 50 and Utah Valley 11.5.
Perennial champion Stanford won its 21st consecutive Directors’ Cup scoring 1448 points.
