LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Following another week of preseason practice, the NM State football team had its second scrimmage on Saturday morning in Aggie Memorial Stadium.

After warming up, the team moved in to open field drills where the first and second team each ran 20 plays. The Aggies then worked on red zone plays before concluding the scrimmage with a 2-minute drill.

The Aggies open the 2015 season on Sept. 5 as they travel to Gainesville, Fla. to take on the Gators in a 5:30 p.m. (MT) kickoff. The game will be televised on the SEC Network and will be on the radio on AM570 in Las Cruces.

Comments from Head coach Doug Martin:

On the team’s progress…
I think we’re playing more physical. I think we are playing at a faster pace. The guys have learned the schemes on both sides better. I think our offense is running the ball a little bit more effectively than we have been, and that’s been good to see.

On the team chemistry…
I think just getting another recruiting class in here, getting the guys that can do the work we want to do here, that has been huge. They’ve been accepted by the older guys. The coaching staff is really a cohesive group here and I think that’s been a big key to it too. There’s just a different feel to this team.

On kicker Parker Davidson
Parker, for a true freshman, to come in and be as consistent and effective as he has been, it has been really good. He’s going to go through his struggles like all freshmen, but I can tell you he has a great leg on kickoff and he helps us on coverage team there, and on field goals he has just been exceptional.

On the offensive line…
Four returning starters gives us a lot of cohesiveness. Those guys have a lot of experience and we have some depth in the offensive line probably for the first time in a long time around here. We have a lot of leadership too. Andy Cunningham is one of our captains, and he’s one of those guys who is returning so I think the offensive line could be a strength for us.

On Fall Camp and the team’s stamina…
It’s just the grind of going through a camp. We talked about that in the beginning. The mental toughness and the physical toughness and we have to be different than other Aggie football teams if we want our season to be different. The players have embraced that and they’ve really attacked it. They’ve attacked the conditioning and the weight lifting and the practices, in particular the last couple, have been really good.
